Workshop Description:
When it comes to interpreting English, interpreters often freeze or become overwhelmed. Why is this? Interpreters have to process two languages at the same time, and remember all the rules, word choices, and more. In the educational setting, educational interpreters have to make decisions on the spot in regards to what to interpret, how to interpret, and when to interpret in the classroom. Sometimes, interpreters do not know what to interpret or how to interpret content that is being taught. At times, the extra ‘fluff’ being taught in the classroom is not necessary or needed to be interpreted to the Deaf and hard of hearing students. Sometimes, sophisticated language is being used in the classroom and interpreters are not sure how to interpret conceptually accurate. Puns, idioms, and metaphors are a few examples of ‘sophisticated’ language. Texts and articles are often used in the classroom and interpreters often just interpret everything, instead of listening for the message. In this workshop, we will focus on “understanding the message” and how to interpret for meaning. We will discuss strategies and tips on when to interpret and when not to interpret the “extra” details.
Educational Objectives:
Analyze sophisticated language and how to interpret conceptually accurately
Learn to interpret books and texts in a manner to best visualize main messages for Deaf and hard of hearing students
Understand how to eliminate unnecessary information and details in order to focus on the main message(s)
Analyze books and texts in order to find the main message(s)
