For decades, interpreter education has centered on linguistic accuracy as the foundation of effective practice. Accuracy remains essential, yet experienced interpreters know that communication often succeeds—or fails—for reasons that extend beyond the words themselves.

Physicians communicate with patients. Lawyers communicate with clients and defendants. Teachers communicate with students. Social workers communicate with families. Employers communicate with applicants. Across every profession, people gradually begin to communicate from inside their own knowledge, assumptions, and patterns of thinking.

As specialized knowledge grows, reasoning becomes compressed, intermediate steps disappear, and assumptions become invisible to the very people making them. What feels obvious to the professional may never be apparent to the listener. This is a mismatch of mental models. It is not unique to medicine, law, or education—it appears whenever people bring different mental models to the same conversation.

Interpreters do not simply preserve language; they preserve the relationships between ideas that allow communication to unfold logically. Communication Architecture™ offers a new lens for understanding interpreted interactions. Rather than asking, “How do I interpret this message?” it asks, “How is understanding being constructed—and where is it breaking down?”

At the center of this framework is DECODE, a systematic analytical process for recognizing the hidden architecture of an interaction before deciding how to respond. DECODE shifts the interpreter’s focus from reacting to language toward analyzing how understanding is being constructed. Once the architecture becomes visible, interpreters can select Communication Architecture™ strategies—including contextual weaving, question layering, functional anchoring, and contrastive specification—that support understanding while preserving the integrity of the speaker’s intended message.

Through authentic case studies drawn from medical, legal, educational, mental health, community, and workplace interpreting, participants will examine interpreted interactions through a new analytical lens, apply the DECODE framework to increasingly complex scenarios, and explore how communication architecture influences professional decision-making across settings.

The workshop concludes with the question every interpreter eventually faces: Now that I see the problem, what should I do? Participants will explore the ethical tensions that arise when communication and linguistic accuracy do not neatly align, examine differing perspectives on interpreter intervention, and practice articulating the reasoning behind their professional decisions.

Rather than offering a collection of isolated techniques, this workshop presents an integrated framework for understanding how communication works, how meaning is constructed, and how interpreters can recognize, analyze, and navigate the hidden architecture that shapes understanding.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1.  Explain how specialized knowledge, including compressed reasoning, skipped steps, and unspoken assumptions, creates barriers to understanding that linguistic accuracy alone cannot resolve, in any interpreting setting.

2.  Describe the principles of Communication Architecture™ and the layers, including context, functional purpose, shared knowledge, discourse patterns, and unspoken assumptions, that shape understanding in interpreted interactions.

3.  Apply the DECODE analytical process to recognize the hidden architecture of an interpreted interaction and identify potential sources of communication breakdown before they occur.

4.  Analyze interpreted encounters across medical, legal, educational, mental health, community, and workplace settings to distinguish linguistic challenges from communication architecture challenges.

5.  Select and apply Communication Architecture™ strategies, such as contextual weaving, question layering, functional anchoring, and contrastive specification, that support understanding while preserving the integrity of the speaker’s intended message.

6.  Evaluate interpreting decisions through multiple ethical frameworks, including static versus dynamic equivalence, means versus ends, and deontological versus teleological reasoning, and defend those decisions in light of message fidelity, communicative purpose, and professional boundaries.

The two days follow a deliberate progression. Friday changes how participants see communication; Saturday teaches them what to do about what they now see. The strategies land as logical consequences of the framework rather than a bag of unrelated techniques.

Segment 2: The Lens: Communication Architecture™

The hidden layers of an interaction: context, functional purpose, shared knowledge, discourse patterns, and unspoken assumptions. Participants begin to see conversations differently.

Segment 3: The Method: DECODE

The analytical process, taught through worked examples and guided discussion. The goal of Day 1 is recognition: participants leave saying “I can see it now,” not yet “I can fix it.”

Choosing among strategies when more than one could apply, and reasoning through interactions where the architecture is contested or layered.

Segment 6: Applying the Framework Across Settings

Medical, legal, educational, mental health, community, and workplace interpreting, in small groups with case analysis. The domain changes; the cognitive process does not.

Segment 7: Ethics and Professional Judgment, the Capstone

Static versus dynamic equivalence; means versus ends; deontological versus teleological reasoning; professional discretion; documenting and defending decisions; why thoughtful interpreters disagree; risk. Communication Architecture™ does not tell you what to do; it helps you understand what you are looking at before you decide what to do.
