Presented by Jennifer Francisco
October 24, 2026
9am - 12pm CT / 10am - 1pm ET
0.3 PS CEUs
Presented in ASL
Workshop Description:
In this workshop, participants will work on how to stretch their “interpreting brains” by learning new ways of signing concepts and vocabulary words. Too often, interpreters become too comfortable with “common” or “simple” signs for concepts and vocabulary words; oftentimes, “common” or “simple” signs may not be appropriate or conceptually accurate. Participants will discuss and analyze their signing choices and decide which signing choices are appropriate/inappropriate and why. This will lead them to expanding their signing banks. Interpreters also struggle with fingerspelling to their students and fingerspelling is crucial to students’ success in reading and writing.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Identify the context behind a concept or vocabulary and sign it correctly
Discuss different ways of signing a concept or vocabulary and explain why they choose the way of signing
Brainstorm different ways of signing a concept or vocabulary
Discuss the importance of fingerspelling a concept or vocabulary before signing
