Relationship & Rapport in VRI: Beyond Sign Choices
Presented by Danielle Meder
September 19, 2026
6 - 8pm CT / 7 - 9pm ET
0.2 PS CEUs
Workshop Description:
So much of interpreter training, mentorship, and professional development centers on word and sign choices. But accuracy in language transfer is only part of what builds trust between an interpreter and the people they serve. This workshop looks at what happens beyond the sign choice, the relational and interpersonal skills that shape how participants experience an encounter, whether they trust the interpreter, and whether they feel they can communicate freely.
In remote settings especially, where technology adds its own friction, these soft skills carry even more weight. Participants will examine how communication style, self-awareness, and relationship management affect encounter outcomes, and will leave with practical tools for building rapport and trust regardless of language pair or modality.
Educational Objectives:
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify the interpersonal and relational skills that support trust and communicative autonomy, independent of specific word or sign choices.
Analyze how communication style and self-awareness affect participant trust and encounter outcomes in remote settings.
Apply practical strategies for building rapport and managing relationships across language pairs and modalities.
Presenter Bio:
Danielle Meder is a nationally certified ASL interpreter with over 20 years in VRS and video remote interpreting as an interpreter and operations leader. Danielle is a licensed trainer and co-author of The Remote Interpreter International for Cross Cultural Communications, and the author of The Remote Interpreter Self-Evaluation Manual: A Comprehensive Guide to Professional Development and Performance Assessment. She is passionate about communicative autonomy, quality language access, and equipping interpreters with practical tools for honest, reflective practice.
