We Need To Talk: Combating Horizontal Violence & Promoting Collegiality Within the Interpreting Profession

Presented by Zoey Mundy

November 14, 2026
10am - 12pm CT / 11am - 1pm ET
0.2 PS CEUs

Workshop Description:
Most interpreters would agree that we need healthy and productive working relationships with each other in order to be successful. However, that sentiment isn’t always reflected in our peer to peer interactions. Horizontal violence is an insidious phenomenon that leads to lack of job satisfaction, retention issues, psychological distress, and isolation. Unresolved conflict and unhealthy dynamics negatively influence our work, our consumers, and our profession as a whole. This interactive workshop explores the impact of horizontal violence within the interpreting profession and equips participants with practical strategies to navigate conflict, strengthen professional relationships, and foster a culture of respect, collaboration, and collegiality.

Educational Objectives:
- Identify what horizontal violence looks like within the context of the interpreting profession.

- Understand the impact of unhealthy interpreter dynamics on professional practice.

- Effectively use conflict resolution tools specifically tailored to interpreters.

- Practice communication strategies that foster mutual respect and collaboration.

- Develop a plan to establish healthy working relationships with colleagues.

Zoey Mundy is a nationally certified ASL/English interpreter with six years of experience providing communication access in educational, medical, community, and professional settings.
