Workshop Description:
During this mini-workshop, participants will explore how reflective practice and peer supervision can enhance their work. Demand Control Schema (Dean & Pollard) will be given special attention as a framework to prepare interpreters to engage in peer supervision. By developing a better understanding about the environmental, interpersonal, paralinguistic, and intrapersonal demands of interpreting work, they will be able to explain the “what” and “why” behind the “it depends.”

This session is open to all students and interpreters interested in a Demand Control Schema introduction or refresher.

Educational Objectives:

  • Describe reflective practice and supervision.

  • Explain demands and controls, including the relationship between main and concurrent demands.

  • Apply Demand-Control Schema to ethical scenarios, categorizing demands and controls as environmental, interpersonal, paralinguistic, and intrapersonal.

  • Analyze control choices on the liberal-conservative spectrum in order to identify ethical and effective control options.
