Workshop Description:
This workshop explores the role of measured omissions in educational interpreting, guiding participants to analyze when and why omissions occur and how to intentionally integrate them into their interpreting work. By combining prior knowledge with practical techniques, interpreters will strengthen their decision-making skills and produce a more dynamic, effective interpreting product. The session is led by Rebekah, who brings eighteen years of experience across K–12, post-secondary, community, and relay settings, currently serving as a lead educational interpreter for Virginia Beach City Public Schools and a relay interpreter with Sorenson Communications.

Educational Objectives:

  • Participants will analyze omissions and how to integrate them into their interpreting product.

  • Participants will combine their prior knowledge and skills with techniques presented to produce a dynamic interpreting product.

Presenter Bio:
Rebekah has worked as a Sign Language Interpreter for eighteen years with experience in K-12, post-secondary, community, and relay interpreting. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in Religious Studies and Anthropology as well as Career Studies Certificates in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, and American Sign Language from Tidewater Community College. She is currently employed as a lead educational interpreter by Virginia Beach City Public Schools and a relay interpreter by Sorenson Communications.

Rebekah lives in Virginia Beach, VA with her husband and daughter. Outside of work, she raises a variety of caterpillars, plays cello, and is an avid reader. In addition to ASL, Rebekah has studied German, French, and Spanish.
