Workshop Description:
Sign language interpreters are often present during emotionally intense and deeply personal moments, making them especially vulnerable to vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout. In this workshop, Heather explores the emotional impact of trauma exposure within the interpreting profession while providing practical strategies for resilience, healthy boundaries, emotional processing, and long-term wellness.
Educational Objectives:
Identify common signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout within the sign language interpreting profession.
Analyze workplace and interpersonal factors that may increase or decrease the risk of vicarious trauma for interpreters.
Evaluate personal and professional coping strategies for maintaining emotional resilience and ethical practice in high-stress interpreting environments.
Presenter Bio:
Heather White is a Licensed Professional Counselor / Mental Health Service Provider and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor who holds NIC Advanced and CI/CT certifications. She specializes in helping people heal from grief and trauma utilizing a creative approach in her work with her clients. Heather is married to a fellow interpreter and has three children, three dogs, two cats, and a bearded dragon.
