Workshop Description:
This workshop explores personal bias and how it impacts professional practice in the classroom. Participants will examine how conscious and unconscious bias can negatively influence interactions with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students and affect access, equity, and educational outcomes.

Interpreters and D/HH staff will engage in guided discussions to identify and unpack their own biases, reflect on how these biases develop, and explore strategies for shifting perspectives through lived experiences and critical self-reflection. Because D/HH students frequently encounter discrimination and oppression rooted in bias, this workshop centers their experiences and highlights the real-world impact of interpreter attitudes and decisions.

Through case scenarios and problem-based discussions, participants will analyze how bias shows up in practice and consider approaches for reducing harm and supporting more equitable, student-centered interpreting..

Educational Objectives:

  •  Describe specific bias in scenarios and how to change perspectives in order to best work with their students

  • Analyze and discuss different types of bias and how it affects their D/HH students

  •  Identify own bias and how to prevent own bias from doing best work in the classroom
